Laser Cataract Surgery Q & A

How is the CATALYS laser system different from traditional cataract surgery?

CATALYS is an innovative technology that allows your ophthalmologist at Des Peres Eye Center to provide a highly customized, precision cataract laser surgery that’s not achievable with traditional manual techniques. CATALYS uses a state-of-the-art, femtosecond laser combined with advanced 3D imaging, and numerous other original features. The CATALYS system creates an accurate 3D map of your eye and tailors your individual treatment to that map.

This allows your ophthalmologist to customize your laser cataract surgery to best suit the uniqueness of each eye. The CATALYS system allows your doctor to create a circular opening in your eye to access and remove the cataract. This opening is nearly 10 times more accurate when using the CATALYS laser system than what is possible with manual techniques.

With traditional surgery, the cataract is removed using manual techniques and manipulations.  By automating certain steps of the surgery, the Catalys system helps minimize potential human error and makes the surgery more precise and gentle.

What happens during laser cataract surgery?

Once your doctor uses the CATALYS system to scan and create 3D images of your eye, the laser will create a precise opening in your natural lens where the cataract is located.  Following this, the laser softens and breaks up the hard cataract material, allowing for gentle, easy removal of the cataract.

Once the cataract is gone, your ophthalmologist inserts a clear lens to replace the cloudy one so you’ll be able to see clearly again.

What are the benefits of CATALYS laser cataract surgery?

There are numerous benefits associated with CATALYS laser cataract surgery, including:

  • Highly customized procedure using advanced 3D imaging
